Opening your workspace.
Record your introduction with the equipment and space you teach from. It doubles as a check of the setup your learners will get.
60 to 90 seconds. If you’re accepted, learners may watch it on your tutor page before their first lesson, so talk to them, not to us.
Use the microphone or headset you teach with. Record a five-second test and listen back.
Face a window or a lamp so your face is well lit. Avoid a bright window behind you.
Your webcam, or your phone on a stand or a pile of books, at eye level and about an arm’s length away. Look at the lens.
Close the door, and turn off fans and notifications.
A plain or tidy background is fine; it doesn’t need to look like a studio. If you teach from more than one room, any of them will do.
Speak in the language you teach. If you teach two, use both.
Turn it on its side. Portrait videos are turned away before they upload.
On iPhone, choose the video from Files, not Photos, to keep full quality. Photos may shrink it to 720p.
Record at 1080p if you can: Settings, Camera, Record Video. 720p is the minimum.
Paste a link to it on the application instead: YouTube, Vimeo, Preply, italki or similar. A link is enough to apply, and Jon reviews it by eye.
If we accept you, we’ll ask for the original file (or a new recording in your usual setup) before anything goes on your tutor page.
Automatically, a few minutes after it arrives. If something fails, the page says what to fix and you can replace the video. A linked video isn’t checked automatically.
